Sigmund Freud is still one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. He was particularly fond of the Ritten and our Hotel Bemelmans Post during his lifetime.
Illustrious guests at Bemelmans Post. Sigmund Freud.
Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis, is probably the most famous guest who stayed at Bemelmans Post. He came to the Ritten with his family in 1911. The originally planned short holiday turned into several months in the end, which the Viennese doctor and psychologist spent in Klobenstein, "where it is beautiful in a very special way". Freud enjoyed the pleasant temperatures and found relaxation and inspiration for some of his best-known works in the sun-drenched nature. The Freud veranda, where he and his wife Martha celebrated their silver wedding anniversary, still bears his name today.
Relaxing days and a silver wedding anniversary on the Ritten.
Freud discovered his favourite holiday destination on the Ritten during a trip that took him to Trento and Bolzano at Easter 1911. Enchanted by the beauty of nature, he stayed with his family until mid-September. One day before his departure, on 14 September, he and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary here. In 1913, wife Martha and daughter Anna holidayed in Klobenstein again. Anna wrote the following lines to her father: "[...] I don't know, but I find Klobenstein almost more beautiful than all the other places we have been to so far". A nice compliment for the Bemelmans Post - because the Freud family had travelled a lot and had seen many a place in the world.
from the Hotel to his professional colleague C. G. Jung:
I have discovered in myself an inexhaustible desire to do nothing, tempered by two-hour sessions reading new material, and I simply do not want to think about the beginning of next month and the heavy workload it will bring.“
